I have collected details from the Openoffice documentation about the 
bibliographic document types and their numbers. The details can be found at 
http://api.openoffice.org/docs/common/ref/com/sun/star/text/BibliographyDataType.html

I have summarised the information in the attached table.  This provides part 
of the answer as why there is three entries for 'Conference Proceedings' in 
the Type pick list they represent, in order, CONFERENCE, INPROCEEDINGS, and 
PROCEEDINGS.
