I really like the premise that there's room to start fresh here. FWIW,
in my formatting system, the logic is based on similar thinking. In
terms of classifying records, there two levels:
refclass: structural, with values like part-inSerial, monograph,
part-inMonograph
The core of the formatting is really based on this.
reftype: more familiar genre-based classification, with a wrinkle
Reftypes are not necessarily singular ("journal article") but can
rather be concatenated across levels. So you could have:
article-academic journal
review-magazine
editorial-newspaper
I'm building a similar logic into a "mods strict" schema I'm working on.
