Can we start some dialogue on the best way to explore how we can move

Hi Howard -- yes, thanks for the update!
Just in case people are interested in an update, Howard's group is one
of the projects I've been collaborating with on citation formatting
(the other is RefBase), and so it's good to see they're excited about
bringing what they've done to OOo!
This project is at a critical juncture right now. Sometime in the next
month, Sun developers (who are on vacation now) are to start work on
low-level changes that we hope will make it really easy for projects
like MDS to plug-in to OOo, and also to significantly improve the
base-line bibliographic support in the suite.
We'll know more next month exactly what the Sun developers are willing
to do. If they do as we are suggesting (update the WP module to
support the new citation coding already approved for the file format,
move to a plug-in API based on ZOOM, and integrate advanced citation
formatting very similar to my citeproc project) then OOo has a bright
future as a serious competitor to Word in the edu market.
