Ignore my previous comment, it was just a warning related to using a legacy
repository with Maven3. I was able to build Giraph just fine.
For other people's reference, the warning messages were of the form:

[ERROR] Unable to determine if resource
com.google.protobuf:protobuf-java:jar:2.4.0a:provided exists in
https://maven-repository.dev.java.net/nonav/repository

Like the said above, even though they are listed as ERRORs, they are WARNINGs.
I will probably create another JIRA for this.
