merged, with two changes:
* cc9be55e2dce419539e6ab24db59dad370dc249c fix where latch is removed from
map (and add comments, better logging, etc)
* f66d1ad4418cdf7ec4af373f3964e6cfb180a891 reorder so template options
method is first, and refactor persistence
