Could instead help the compiler by assigning `key != null ? key :
ConfigKeys.newConfigKey(Object.class, keyName)` to an intermediate
`ConfigKey<?>` value. Same below.
Given we are casting below anyway could remove generics altogether and stop
pretending we are "safe".
