i wonder if the problem is that the `@` is being escaped when it shouldn't.
would explain why it fails non-deterministically, probably sometimes it runs
in the non-`@2` directory. and can't tell why it is getting escaped at all ...
we do `Class.getResource(..).getFile()` and that's what we use. on my box it
doesn't seem to be escaped if i mess it up to run in a dir containing an `@`.
