    Very minor personal preference: the nesting of ifs seems strange to me. I'd 
have written:
    ```
    if (type.getKind() == RegisteredTypeKind.SPEC) { 
        return createSpec(...);
    } else if (type.getKind() == RegisteredTypeKind.UNRESOLVED) {
        ...
    } else {
        throw new UnsupportedTypePlanException(...);
    }
    ```
