We don’t have enough doc in this area. I suggested in 
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CALCITE-936 that 
http://calcite.apache.org/docs/avatica_overview.html should have a (short) 
section on starting and configuring an HttpServer. Contributions welcome...
