I’ve been thinking along similar lines. I can’t think of a way to make
birefrigerence work in a logo (e.g. [3]) but I sketched some ideas[4] of using
making a block of calcite look like a block of quartz, or incorporating a
diagram of refracted rays (somewhat reminiscent of the dark-side-of-the-moon
image, I know).

The middle logo is probably my favorite. With a nice font and use of
colors/negative space I think it could work.

In the last picture I was trying to capture the idea of data being refracted
through multiple rules/operators. It’s not scientifically accurate because once
light has been split based on its polarization you can’t split it again (at
least not in the same optical plane). But hey.
