Julian —— Attachment L: Report from the Apache Calcite Project [Julian Hyde] ## Description: Apache Calcite is a highly customizable framework for parsing and planning queries on data in a wide variety of formats. It allows database-like access, and in particular a SQL interface and advanced query optimization, for data not residing in a traditional database. Avatica is a sub-module within Calcite, and provides a framework for building local and remote JDBC and ODBC database drivers. Since March 2016, Avatica has an independent release schedule, but resides in the same git repository. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: Calcite became a top-level project exactly one year ago. On graduation, the community decided not to adopt bylaws, but to have a "state of the project" discussion each year, and to rotate the PMC chair yearly if possible. We have been having this discussion, and there seems to be consensus on a candidate for PMC chair. Feedback during the discussion included: * Satisfaction with the pace of the project, and its ablity to "fan out" to cover diverse areas of interest (some of practical use to production systems, some of them more experimental); * A sense that Avatica is still doing OK as a sub-project (that is, it is not yet time to consider TLP status), but needs to be factored into its own git repo; * A thirst for documentation to make it easier for casual users to use Calcite. Development and mailing list activity is steady for both Calcite and its Avatica sub-project. There has been one release of Calcite, with another currently under vote, and no releases of Avatica. Julian Hyde gave a talk at FlinkForward (Berlin). ## Health report: Activity levels on mailing lists, git and JIRA are normal for both Calcite and Avatica. ## PMC changes: - Currently 14 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Josh Elser on Wed Feb 17 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 19 committers. - New commmitters: - Francis Chuang was added as a committer on Tue Sep 27 2016 - Milinda Pathirage was added as a committer on Tue Jul 12 2016 - MinJi Kim was added as a committer on Sun Sep 04 2016 ## Releases: - 1.9.0 was released on Wed Sep 21 2016
