Maryann is proposing to change the data type that identifies the version of a schema from a “long” (typically milliseconds since epoch) to a new interface, SchemaVersion, that must be partially ordered. Although this is a breaking change to the Schema API, I don’t think it’s worth waiting for the next major release; the API being changed only appeared in 1.13.
