There was some discussion about having students contribute to the project as part of GSoC in the past, but I don't think it has happened before.

In the past, Michael had some students working on parts of Calcite, but not in GSoC capacity: - https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/f0ea9594f151e7f6ad9b7f305fc2c87d99f64acac2cc76e179a1a1f7%40%3Cdev.calcite.apache.org%3E

I would definitely love to see this happen. It would be a great opportunity for students to learn something new and interesting and a good opportunity for the project as well.

Hi community,

Does Calcite ever participate in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) [1]. What do
you think of creating smaller projects and allowing students to pick them
up?

I used to host two GSoC students for Apache Beam and I found the
collaboration was smooth and students could add valuable additions to the
project.
