I'm the author, and certainly willing to donate it.
The component only uses the cassandra thrift API and does not run in process
with cassandra. The tests currently would require JDK1.6 to run cassandra in
process, but I would think the actual component would work with JDK 1.5...not
sure if this makes a difference or not.
