DirectMemory is a project that just joined the Apache incubator
(http://incubator.apache.org/directmemory/).
Its a multilayered cache implementation featuring off-heap memory management
(a-la BigMemory).
As far as I know we have several cache components, but I am not sure if we have
any "off-heap" memory.
So I think that it will be a great addition.
