In the last few weeks I read at least two threads [1] [2] which create the
impression we will see a Camel 2.12.0 after Camel 2.11.0 is out. I want to
discuss this.

In October 2010 we asked our users about the features/improvements/... they
would like to see in Camel 3.0 [3]. This is more than 2 years ago.
If Camel 2.12.0 will be the next version on trunk, and we spend the same
time for this new minor version as for the other ones, we will not finish
this version before August/September 2013. Than the Camel survey is almost
3 years ago. I don't think this is a good sign to our users. They already
asked for Camel 3.0 more often!

What they (and me too) are missing is a scheduling and commitment for Camel
3.0.0. I want to work out this with you in the next days/weeks.
IMO, this discussion should be our first priority in the next days/weeks to
remain credible for our users.

First, I think we have to work on our Camel 3.0 road map [4]. There are
many additional good ideas users and committers explained to me in the last
months (at ApacheCon EU 2012, by mail, chat, ...). It will add them
quickly. You may also have some useful ideas? Bring them on the table.
Second, we should discuss which of the topics we have to implement in Camel
3.0 and which topics we will postpone to Camel 3.1+. I don't think we can
implement all of them in 3.0 without having a really long release cycle -
which we should prevent.
Third, if we have assigned the important tasks, we should have a roughly
schedule in mind when Camel 3.0.0 RC1 could be available.

When we are at this point, we should switch the trunk to 3.0-SNAPSHOT if
it's not already the case and start working on it! We all want the 3 hump
Camel ;-)

Best,
Christian
