Probably I was running into another/other issues of the maven-release-plugin in combination with GIT: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MRELEASE-812
I'm back to version 2.4.1 and use the following setting: LANG='en_US.UTF-8' Now the tag contains the right version. Will running the mvn release:perform in a few hours (I have to move now - with my machine...).
