We love contributions http://camel.apache.org/contributing I suggest just to get started working on something and contribute. On JIRA we tend to grant karma to people whom has been active for a bit, instead of the very beginning. You can just add a comment on a ticket that you are working on this. For code contributions I suggest to use github PRs as this is easier to do and also keep track of who did what.
