Ok, solved it. I had to specify mapreduce.input.carboninputformat.databaseName as well as mapreduce.input.carboninputformat.tableName in serde properties... did not find this in the documentation by in the code itself (org/apache/carbondata/hadoop/api/CarbonInputFormat.java)
