We use WAS 4.0 and Castor which uses a 1.2 JDK. We can't upgrade the app server for a variety of reasons in any short period of time.  I vote for some form of conditional compilation.

Tim,

if that's the case (and unless there's other objecting), I'll try to get 0.9.9 migrated to JDK 1.3. But let's hear whether there's anybody out there feeling in a different way.

Thanks
Werner

Hi Werner,

unless there's an overwhelming outcry to retain the JDK 1.2 code base, I would urge you to move to JDK 1.3.

We can get by with an older version of Castor JDO, whether that be 0.9.7 or 0.9.9.

As to using Eclipse for building apps, I have written a number of Ant scripts that can be run from WSAD 5.1 or using a stand-alone mode which calls out to the WSAD runtime environment and uses the WSAD workspace for CVS extraction and Java compilation. You may be able to tailor that for Eclipse.
WSAD provides a range of WAS specific plugins, which is ideal for our situation, but you may need equivalent plugins for other app servers (eg. WebLogic).

Andrew,

with Ant, this should be easy, using 'if' attributes on our targets. As to Eclipse, don't ask me how ... ;-). But I am sure there's ways ...

Hi Werner,

I've been wondering about this for my Java 5 enhancements to Castor XML.

We would need to reflect this some how in both the Ant and Eclipse project files I guess.

Andy.

Hi Tim,

I wonder whether we should consider moving towards conditional compilation with Castor. That would imply, though, that not all features would be available for a particular JDK.

Hi Werner,

yeah, we're trying to move away from JDK 1.2 (WAS 4.0) as quickly as possible.

I will plug Castor JD0 0.9.7 and 0.9.9 into our apps as soon as possible.

Hi Tim,

ideally, less than two months, if possible. And I guess you would want to use upcoming releases like 0.9.7 or 0.9.9 on JDK 1.2, correct ?

Regards
Werner

Hi Werner & Co.

we are still using JDK 1.2 as part of WebSphere Application Server 4.0.

There is work underway here to migrate to WebSphere Application Server 5.1 which uses JDK 1.3. IBM no longer supports WAS 4.0, hence the move.

I suspect we will be using WAS 4 (and JDK 1.2) for the next 3 months (6 months at the worst) during the transition.

What time frame are you thinking of for migrating from JDK 1.2 to 1.3 ?

Thanks.

Tim.

Hi,

as we are trying to make some decisions with regards to future features, we'd be interested to learn if there's still users out
there that require Castor (JDO) to work with JDK 1.2. If that's the case, can you please come forward and indicate to us why
this would still be required ? If I don't hear from anybody within a couple of days, we'll assume that we can move to JDK 1.3 as
the least common denominator.

Thanks
Werner
