Problem: suppose it takes 5K per small table or twice that (10K) for a bigger
table definition in the data map file. When the table count shoots up into
several hundreds, we are looking into datamap XML files several megs big. Now
suppose you store the Cayenne xmls under a version control and use it to track
the changes. The size along with natural problems of XML versioning makes it
very difficult to understand any arbitrary non-trivial change in the past. If
there was a chance to break those files on entity-by-entity basis, that would
make change tracking easy.
