For those who haven't seen it yet, Toplink from Oracle has been released as open source under the Eclipse project and named EclipseLink.

Looks like they have JPA and quite a few other nice bits and pieces. I found this introductory article:

It seems that EOF is one of the only major Java persistence frameworks still closed source. I don't know if there are any interesting parts of EclipseLink worth looking at (like database compatibility layers or test suites) or whether the Eclipse license is compatible with the Apache license, but it might be worth a look.
