I found that unfiled documents cannot be created using the OpenCMIS client when using the AtomPub binding. In method org.apache.chemistry.opencmis.client.bindings.spi.atompub.ObjectServiceImpl. createDocument the folderId always used whereas it is null when creating unfiled documents.
