AutoCompleteTextField does not pop up suggestion list when in a form

I noticed that the AutoCompleteTextField does not seem to work. Looking at the
code, I found that dispatchActionEvent() may not be called (in particular, if
there is no request parameter with the field's name, then
dispatchActionEvent() will not be called).
As a [temporary] fix, I subclass AutoCompleteTextField and override onProcess()
something like this:
if (getContext().isAjaxRequest()) {
dispatchActionEvent
} else {
super.onProcess();
}
This seems to work in my case, but it is entirely likely that I am doing
something dangerous/stupid/wrong.
