Here's Kyo's code that outlines how the method should work with 3D values 
arrays, which is now the format of the values field for Dataset objects.  There 
were a couple of minor bugs in Kyo's code which prevented it from running, so 
I've cleaned it up and added it to the pull request for CLIMATE-542, along with 
some unit tests.
