Hi all,

I would like to share a quick update on the collaboration between the
Apache MADlib and Apache Cloudberry communities, and outline the next
steps we are working towards.

1. Community Collaboration & PMC Involvement

Based on recent discussions, we see a strong opportunity to revitalize
MADlib through increased contributor engagement.

Several contributors from the Cloudberry community — including Max
Yang, Shengwen Yang, and myself — have expressed interest in getting
more deeply involved in MADlib.

Based on recent discussions, the intention is for active Cloudberry
contributors to:

- Contribute to MADlib development
- Help review PRs and support releases
- And, following ASF governance processes, participate in the PMC as appropriate

We believe this can help bring new energy into the MADlib community
while maintaining its Apache governance model.

2. MADlib Support for Cloudberry

On the technical side, we have already made progress.

A PR to add Cloudberry support to MADlib is ready:
https://github.com/apache/madlib/pull/627

We would appreciate reviews and feedback from the MADlib community to
help move this forward.

3. Ongoing Discussion on Future Direction

I previously initiated a broader discussion on MADlib’s future here:
https://lists.apache.org/thread/zdogpfdb6og54pnsohl99ojxkjc5c0zz

We encourage everyone to continue contributing ideas there, especially around:

- Attracting contributors
- Strengthening ties with the PostgreSQL and analytics ecosystem

4. Long-term Alignment (Post-Incubation Scenario)

Looking ahead, and under the condition that Apache Cloudberry
successfully graduates from the Incubator as a TLP, one possible
direction discussed is: Exploring whether MADlib could become a
subproject under Cloudberry.

This would, of course, follow ASF governance.

The motivation behind this idea is to:

- Provide MADlib with a more active contributor base
- Strengthen integration with an MPP analytics engine
- Attract broader adoption from the PostgreSQL ecosystem

At this stage, this is a forward-looking discussion point rather than
a formal proposal.

Overall, we see this collaboration as a natural alignment between two
Apache projects, and a good opportunity to grow both communities
together.

We welcome feedback from both the MADlib and Cloudberry communities.
Would also like to thank Ed, Max Yang, Shengwen Yang, Shine, and others for
thoughtful discussions that helped shape this collaboration.

Best,
Dianjin Wang
