Does that mean that until 5386 is fixed It would not be possible to use a self 
signed certificate for the S3 storage backend?

There is code in the DownloadManagerImpl.configure() method indicating that SSL 
certs other than for realhostip.com are not supported. I have created a bug for

What browser do you use? Try the following steps 
(1) update SSL Certificate in Infrastructure tab. 
(2) change secstorage.ssl.cert.domain in global setting 
(3) restart management server
