Impressive! What did you do this on?
Was it a full distribution, or build the binary type of thing?
Actually, it's kind of interesting.
It was of course a fresh checkout on a new machine and included every block. I started the build and switched the KVM over to my desktop and forgot about it. Much later I came back and saw the time and couldn't resist.
That was on a 800 Mhz laptop running win2k with only 128M ram (gov't issue - very painful to work on). It's the only laptop I have access
to ATM and I wanted to bring a compiled and running tree to the DC
GetTogether. I also forgot to exit out of Eclipse (a major memory hog)
before starting the build but did bail out of it after a minute or two.
Normally, I'm building at home on a slower processor (~400 Mhz) but with a little more RAM (3x128M) and it does go slow but never that slow. I usually count on 15-20 minutes if I build all blocks.
What I found a little interesting (but not unexpected I guess) is that my cpu at home is usually pegged out at 100% the entire time, but the laptop wasn't. Of course, with 128M ram, it's paging memory out to disk constantly which is not going to be fun.
So, the moral of the story is: don't do development on a box that barely has enough RAM to run the operating system. ;)
