Are you recommending that I do all of my development as a patch to a sitemap rather than as a sitemap,
It won't help you ATM, but for the xconf, that's the way we work with Cocoon on our projects... the project sitemap however is mounted as a subsitemap, and contains explicit definitions for all components relevant to that project.
