Don't know if you've seen Carsten Ziegler and Matthew Langham's book on Cocoon. It cover's how to add protocols/sources to Cocoon (on 2.0.4, but once you've understood that, doing it on 2.1 shouldn't be hard).

It basically consists in writing an implementation of SourceFactory and Source (those in Avalon Excalibur, for Cocoon 2.1), and add the SourceFactory class name to cocoon.xconf.

There are several implementations in Excalibur and in Cocoon, and writing a simple source (not writeable, not traversable, not etc...) should be quite easy.
