though it's quite simple: a message is retrieved from the catalogue you specify, and if no catalogue is specified, it is retrieved from the default catalogue (which is specified in the configuration of the i18n transformer).
Oh dear .... it is less flexible than I had thought ..... I had assumed it would look in all catalogues setup in the sitemap .... this is probably the cause of some of the problems I have been having ;)
