though it's quite simple: a message is retrieved from
the catalogue you specify, and if no catalogue is specified, it is

Oh dear .... it is less flexible than I had thought ..... I had assumed it would look in all catalogues setup in the sitemap .... this is probably the cause of some of the problems I have been having ;)
