That's what I tried to avoid - one more component... And for this 
component, we will have to create another block, "xindice", right?
...nice thing about embedded driver is that you just call it and it 
creates DB...

   

Hmm, ok, can we use the "force-property" parameter in web.xml?
 

And use the xconf patch tool to patch web.xml, only if the xmldb block 
is present?
