This is covered by PipelineUtil and it has been suggested to even deprecate processPipelineTo() from FOM, see http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-dev&m=107117880200357&w=2
I see. So it's just missing in 2.2 to close the bug.
