If you do your CVS snapshot against a particular date it is reproducible, something like
cvs export -D 2003-12-31 12:00 somemodule
IIUC the Avalon people sometimes do restructerings like moving directories in the repository itself, which breaks the above.
As long as the modules are the same the cvs export would still work even after moving things around inside a module. The problem for some people is, that they don't have access to any CVS because of restrictions in their company, Ralph often mentions this. So he asked us for storing the zipped source versions of the libs we have in our CVS in another place where he can get them via http or maybe ftp. There is no problem for the released versions as they are stored "the normal way" (downloadable as binaries and sources).
If we decide to zip sources of unreleased JARs for released Cocoon, I know the appropriate place to put those sources:
http://cvs.apache.org/dist/cocoon/cocoon-2.1.4/
PS And Avalon before 4.0 is not even tagged... How do I get my favorite Avalon 3.0a3? ;-)
