Not quite sure if its about your issue, but there is a old thread about ResourcReader and PDFs: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=103896181500004&r=1&w=2 and in bugzilla: http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=7156 but that is closed and fixed.
