For low volumes, that can be done. You'd just use a serial port. There
are various unix apps IIUC that can send SMSes.

This is what I need just by now... I'm developing a software for a
thesis so at the moment I don't know a great amount of messages... I
just need a working prototipe.

I use aql.com. they have http and smpp interfaces, and reasonable prices
for small scale operations.
