Even with Java 1.4 the Xalan version we specified should be used. Maybe
we should add a test case that just executes Xalan's environment check [1].
Since the NPE happens in TransformerIdentityImpl.flushStartDoc() when we
send a startElement() event I gave calling a startDocument() a try.
