Found my e-mail; the JUnit problem is that:
JUnit 3.8.2 contains a 1.4+ method call:
Boolean.valueOf(boolean)
This is used by the methods:
assertEquals([String message,] boolean expected, boolean actual)
I don't know if there are any other 1.4+ method calls in 3.8.2.
3.8.1 does seem to be compatible with 1.3.
