I've just realised that the Commons parent POM release profile overrides the Nexus deployment descriptor from the Apache parent pom. This means mvn deploy will use the live forge for non-snapshot releases unless steps are taken to override the URL. At the time the Commons Parent was changed to do this, Nexus was not in use, so it was a sensible change. However, now that Nexus is available, AFAICT it actually makes things less safe.
