You should probably select one or two Apache projects that you feel are interesting for you, and start looking at the JIRA issues reported against them in issues.apache.org/jira and see whether some of the bugs or new features requested by our community are topics that you would like to work on. Each Apache project has a user and a dev mailing list which are the primary means of communication so joining these lists is the first thing to do.
