There is a large number of Apache Open Source projects written in Java and also more than a dozen written in C: https://projects.apache.org/projects.html?language Go though the list, visit the websites of the projects which use your language(s) of choice, then pick anyone which interests you and subscribe to the developers mailing list and introduce yourself. People are going to point in the right direction on how to get started with the specific project. This list is for general Apache Community Development.
