I just came across a lovely talk by Carin. There's one of the most valuable reasons to being an Apache project in there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzfnlcHtwiY&feature=youtu.be&t=841 To me, being at Apache means (and signals to potential contributors) that you have signed up to being vendor neutral, to being a place that is open to people who want to contribute, to being a place that will communicate with downstream users at eye level - seeing them as potential contributors, as potential committers, as potential peers in steering the project. All of that independently of their affiliation but only based on what good they contribute to the project, how committed they are to it. Me personally, I believe this mentality of openness is a big driver for people to get involved and spend their time on projects here to begin with - increasing the pool of people to recruit new helping hands from.
