It looks like the problem is that the _id: field does not support wild-card
search.
I cannot find the elasticsearch mapping definitions anywhere, so it's difficult
to know how to fix this.
I suspect the ES mappings will need to be updated to include a copy of the _id
that can be searched for - or maybe store the short id itself.
The code will then need to be updated to use the new field.
