If you’re familiar with motivations, it’s the difference between creating a space where people are intrinsically motivated vs extrinsically motivated. Carrots are a mechanism for extrinsic motivation which is prolly not healthy for our Way. I’d add that they are also meaningless given the disparity with which people gain committership, PMC membership, and Foundation membership across our projects. Merit isn’t transferrable across projects leaving the only merit badge of interest a Member badge, which isn’t very meaningful outside the organization to anyone whose clueful.
