The Apache Software Foundation oversees more than 200 mostly independent
projects[1].
We do mentor new contributors, but the details depend on the project.
You should probably:
* choose the project that interests you the most.
* ask on the project's mailing list, what kind of help they need and how
you can contribute.
The only common characteristic of all projects is that each one of them
needs help.
