Hi Rich,

This is a great idea and initiative. I am one of the people heavily
contributing to the event side for the Apache CloudStack project and also for
the increasing the awareness of the project. To be honest, my biggest burden to
join more on the AFS side is the lack of time to read through the huge pile of
emails going all sides. There are some here, some on planners, some on other
threads, For me is impossible to read all of these.
Let me know if I can be more helpful at some way for ASF in general.

Best regards,

Perhaps the biggest challenge in the ComDev effort has always been finding
people to do the work. We tend to be a small group of the same people, all of
whom are already overcommitted. We have great ideas and very little followup.

Meanwhile, many of our project have people who are the de-facto community
organizers/managers for those projects, doing the event work, the new
contributor outreach, the promotion of these projects. I have been thinking
about how we might draw those people into ComDev, so that we can use that
passion and expertise for the entire Foundation.

I’d like to identify that person in every project at the ASF, and designate
them Project Ambassadors. Bringing together a group of these people to discuss
their strategies in their project, share tips, cross promote, and support one
another, is a first step here. Having a weekly (bi-weekly?) office hour where
these folks can talk about the work they are doing in their project, their
challenges and successes, and brainstorm about how they could be more effective
with more resources, will help identify the next ComDev members, while also
helping them strengthen one another.

Hosting an annual ASF Project Ambassadors meetup, either at C/C, or at some
other event, would provide opportunities to further amplify their work, and
share resources. This would require a modest budget to cover venue, food/bev,
swag, and travel.

We can also help offer these projects more spotlight by combining our efforts,
working with groups like M&P, TAC, and so on, and helping educate younger
projects about the services that the ASF offers that they are not taking
advantage of.

In this work stream, I’m hoping to find some of these people who help us find
more of these people. I know some of you are here. Most are not (yet), and we
need to find them. I’m also hoping to find people who are interested in
coordinating such a group, and figuring out what the budget request should look
like for this work, both in the short term, and brainstorming what we might do
longer term if/when this takes off. Finally, I’d like to find people who have
already been involved in similar work in other organizations who can help us
think about this right.
