Well, I'd rephrase that as "post a note on user@ to see if anyone has strong feelings" then. The point was more to reach the part of the community that's not paying close attention to development. But, as Damien points out, it's probably more productive to just say "You have a week to notify us of a commit you think should make it into the upcoming maintenance release".
