This applies cleaning and all tests pass for me. And it looks stable.
I think it will be worth waiting to apply this until after 1.0 is branched, not
because I have any worries about the stability, but because I have a feeling
people will be have useful feedback about some of the validation rules, and
maybe other details about the API. I think it'd be healthy for the feature to
sit in trunk and get some feedback before going into a release.
