many early installation failures are due to missing permissions / access to key
directories.
- couchdb shell script can check for these before the cryptic erlang VM barfs
vomitus
- couch.erl and couch_app.erl could provide more details on missing erlang
applications etc.
These are all quick fixes unless somebody has a better idea!
