Noah Slater commented on COUCHDB-2248:
--------------------------------------
Nicolas, I want to remove the single instance of "slave" from our docs because
it is discriminatory and offensive speech. I am well aware that you, Bob, and
others on this thread do not appear to think so. But there are people in the
tech community who do. You do not need to understand that, or even agree with
it. The fact remains. As a community that values openness, inclusivity, and
diversity, this is a topic that we should take seriously.
Bob, it is unfair of you to characterise my conduct in such a way. My opinion
has changed three or four times throughout the thread. I have listened to other
people's arguments, and taken on board good points. Every comment I have posted
has been an attempt to move the discussion towards better group understanding
and consensus. This ticket isn't the correct place to discuss conduct though,
and I will move this to another forum.
Getting back to the point, Bob, you are the only person who is not happy with
"replica" at this point. From my understanding of the thread, everyone else is
happy with me replacing that one occurrence of "slave".
I ask you to withdraw your objection so we can move forward with broad
consensus. If you do not want to withdraw your objection, can you suggest an
alternative replacement as suggested in my previous comment. If we cannot come
up with an alternative that we agree on, I shall simply remove the reference
altogether.
> Replace "master" and "slave" terminology

> Project: CouchDB
> Issue Type: Bug
> Security Level: public(Regular issues)
> Components: Documentation
> Reporter: Noah Slater
> Priority: Trivial
>
> Inspired by the comments on this PR:
> Summary is: `master` and `slave` are racially charged terms, and it would be
> good to avoid them. Django have gone for `primary` and `replica`. But we also
> have to deal with what we now call multi-master setups. I propose "peer to
> peer" as a replacement, or just "peer" if you're describing one node.
> As far as I can tell, the primary work here is the docs. The wiki and any
> supporting material can be updated after.
